Persona 5: A Quirky, Cool Adventure in Modern-Day Japan

Whether you’ve played every Persona game since 1996 or you’re delving into the Shin Megami Tensei universe for the first time, you can’t go wrong with Persona 5. It’s the sixth game in the Persona series, and its unique graphics and captivating story will delight old and new players alike. This spoiler-free overview takes a look at some different aspects of this long-awaited game.

A Quirky, Cool Adventure in Modern-Day Japan

When you enter the world of Persona 5, it almost feels like you’re playing a “Japan simulator” at some points. The developers created a kaleidoscopic, vibrant daydream version of Tokyo with a nightmare world woven just beneath the surface. The main character takes on the role of a normal Japanese student during the day, but leads a mysterious double-life as a phantom thief by night.

The dungeons in Persona 5 are called palaces, and the main villains are evil adults who abuse their power and inflict deep psychological scars on innocent high school students. Your character’s ultimate goal is to strike down these villains by bringing about a “change of heart” and demolishing their palace, thus restoring order and ending their reigns of terror one by one.

A Turn-Based Battle System that Withstands the Test of Time

Persona 5 is a classic JRPG with a modern twist. The turn-based battle system is reminiscent of all the old classic JRPGs like Final Fantasy X or Xenosaga. But unlike many JRPGs that still cling to a turn-based system in the modern age, Persona 5 doesn’t feel lazy or dated. Instead, the developers have managed to revamp the same battle system that appeared in the old Persona games. They preserved the nostalgic feel of the old battle system while adding new features such as Baton Pass.

You’re presented with several fairly simple battle menus at the beginning of the game, but as you progress through the palaces and encounter new monsters, things get a lot more complicated. As you encounter monsters such as Agathion and Berith, you’ll have to rely on elemental attacks to walk away unscathed. Your party members will master devastating elemental attacks such as the fire attack Maragi and the ice attack Bufu. By striking an enemy’s elemental weakness, you’ll take them down much more quickly and move on to face stronger foes.

Interact With Memorable Characters

In Persona 5 you’ll be able to interact with enchanting, memorable characters and have plenty of in-depth conversations with all your favorite NPCs. Your main character will be faced with decisions that can dramatically alter the dialogue and even take the story in a different direction. The rich dialogue allows you to become fully immersed in the in-game universe, and there are countless cutscenes that will leave you feeling like the characters are your real friends by the end of the game.

A Worthy Addition to the Persona Series

Overall, Persona 5 is an insanely fun and addictive JRPG. Once you start playing, you’ll have a hard time doing anything besides sitting on your couch and powering through until the end. Beautiful graphics, an engaging turn-based battle system, and interesting character interactions make Persona 5 live up to all the hype. Persona 5 gives you a glimpse into a wild, colorful alternate universe where the hearts of some men are wicked enough to distort reality itself. Thankfully, the strong wills and rebellious spirits of the phantom thieves will change their evil ways.
